Update: Although Fields Book Store closed our physical location on Polk Street on February 28, 2013, we continue on as a web- and phone-order based service. You can still have a panoramic view of our store's interior. Be sure to scroll upwards to see the ceiling murals.
Fields Book Store has served San Francisco and spiritual seekers worldwide since 1932. The store is still in its original location on Polk Street where George Fields first opened his doors to the City's writers and readers. Longtime friends of Fields may remember the store as a nexus for the Gurdjieff Work, and the contributions of previous owner Ruth Hill Cooke to local Fourth Way studies. (An interview with Mrs. Cooke at the age of 96, Paid In Gold, is recorded in Parabola Magazine [17.1].)
Fields is committed to serving seekers and scholars in a broad range of religious traditions. In addition to Fourth Way material, we are known for our collections in Western esoteric and magical studies, classical and Renaissance philosophy, Buddhism, shamanism, Sufism, Jungian psychology, and modern healing arts. Our partnership with Pratum Book Company brings us rare volumes in hermeticism, philosophy, mythology, and psychical research. We also seek out the best and the newest in today's spiritual traditions.
As Polk Village's neighborhood bookstore, we carry Bay Area bestsellers on all topics. Fields has a proud history of full-service bookselling. We are happy to order books on any subject for you and to do book searches in our areas of expertise.
At our in-store events series you can meet scholars, healers, and practitioners from many traditions. In addition to talks from visiting speakers, we have ongoing lectures on Tarot from Thalassa, founder of the Daughters of Divination and impresario behind the Bay Area Tarot Symposium. Our events schedule is available through Google Calendar. Add it to your own Google calendar simply by adding our email address, email@example.com.
Come into our shop. Enjoy the classic atmosphere - vintage wooden shelves and tall ladders. Gaze upward at the celestial ceiling mural created by Shelley Masters -- stretching from an alchemical Sun over the eastern door to moon phases cycling in the twilit western sky. Take a respite from the busy city, and let us help you find the books that are perfect for you.

Employing the latest research and discoveries, including previously unpublished reminiscences of the real man, Tobias Churton investigates the truth beneath th...
Gnosis 19: The Trickster. A Journal of the Western Inner Traditions
"As long as we lie to ourselves, the Trickster will be with us.
He'll show up just when we least want him, to embarrass us on a
first date, to prove us fools in front of the learned company
we're trying to impress, to make us miss a power breakfast with
that all-important business contact."
- Richard Smoley, from the introduction
