Thame: IHO, 2006,. First Edition Softcover, Large Quarto (12" x 9"), 96pp. isbn 1872189547. Printed card covers in opaque glassine dustwrapper. Colored Illustrations. A remarkable work. The book was created as a tribute to mark the 50th Anniversary of the death of Austin Osman Spare, and copies were presented to each of 80 people who the editor and his advisors deemed to have made contributions to the increasing awareness of Spare's work. A list of those presentees appears in the preliminary pages. Beautifully produced, printed on permanent goatskin parchment paper, with numerous black and white and color reproductions of photographs and works by Spare, many of which have not been previously reproduced. Tipped in color frontis. Contents include a variety of short texts by Spare, an essay by Denis Bardens: 'No Man Shall Understand,' two poems about Spare by Victor Neuburg, 'The Theory of Re-currence' by Grace Rogers, Letters from Frank Letchford to Dennis Bardens (much biographical material on Spare), etc. etc. Approx. twenty-two color reproductions of works by Spare, and numerous monochromes, photographs, vignettes etc. One of 80 presentation copies (each of which had the name of the presentee printed in red on the list at the front), and includes the presentation letter from Tony Naylor. The book itself is in mint condition, although the glassine sleeve has a small tear and some wear along the edges.
