Anacalypsis: An Attempt to Draw Aside the Veil of Saitic Isis (2 volumes) (Out of Print)
by Higgins, Godfrey
Book ID: A7077, A7077
New York: Macy-Masius, 1927. Second Edition. Hardcover. Large 4to. Two volumes (complete). xxxiii + 867 & xi + 519, [V] pp. Decorated grey cloth with gilt titling to spine and upper board, top edge gilt, b&w plates, index at rear of each volume.
A reprint of Godfrey Higgins' massive two volume work on the history of religions in which he put forth an argument broadly similiar to that presented by Charles-François Dupuis in his "Origine de tous les cultes ou Religion Universelle," (see item 10498) that all religions were derived from a single common ancestor. The book was first printed in two volumes - issued in 1833 & 1836 respectively - in an edition of 200 copies (see above), and was then reprinted in an abridged form in 1878. This 1927 edition was limited to 350 numbered sets, and was the first complete edition to be published since the First.
Cloth generally a bit rubbed, spine a little darkened. Spine ends and corners bumped and chafed with some light fraying, 1/2 inch closed tear at upper front gutter of volume I, a few light scratches to spine and boards, paper very lightly browned. Still, overall a sound and clean near VG set. Lacking slipcase that was issued with this set.

The manuscript appears and disappears throughout history, from the library of the Holy Roman Emperor Rudolf II to a secret sale of books in 1903 by the Society of Jesus in Rome. The book s language has eluded deciphe...More
