Description

Hardback 6 x 9, 1 volume(s), 295 pages, 5 illustrations

One of the most popular goddesses from the ancient world is Asherah. She appears everywhere from the Bible to novels and comic books. The facts about Asherah, however, are often overlooked. In this edition of Wiggins’ 1993 study of the goddess, the author’s articles and book reviews concerning the goddess have been added to his original book. To date, this monograph contains the only full-length treatment of the Ugaritic material on Asherah in addition to a comprehensive examination of the textual sources from the Hebrew Bible, ancient Mesopotamia, Epigraphic South Arabian and Hittite sources, as well as the intriguing Hebrew inscriptions that perhaps mention the goddess. The original text of the monograph is supplemented by articles that update the ever-expanding bibliography on the goddess and that deal with iconographic representations and Asherah’s supposed associations with trees, snakes, and lions. Gorgias Press is pleased to bring back into print this study on a timely subject.

Steve A. Wiggins earned his Ph.D. at the University of Edinburgh in 1992. He taught Hebrew Bible at Nashotah House Episcopal Seminary from 1992 to 2004, and Religious Studies at the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh in 2005-2006. Since that time he has taken the position of Acquisitions Editor at Gorgias Press and he continues his research on the ancient roots of civilization.

"As long as we lie to ourselves, the Trickster will be with us. He'll show up just when we least want him, to embarrass us on a first date, to prove us fools in front of the learned company we're trying to impress, to make us miss a power breakfast with that all-important business contact."
