by Carmichael, Alexander
Publisher: Steiner Books
Binding: Hardcover with dust jacket

Carmina Gadelica is an anthology of poems and prayers from the Celtic oral tradition, the most comprehensive ever collected. Coming from communities all over the Highlands and the islands of Scotland, they were often shared or performed at the evening ceilidh and thus passed on from generation to generation.
When Alexander Carmichael compiled this collection during the late nineteenth century, he created a lasting record of a culture and way of life that has largely disappeared. In his introduction, he recalls with great warmth and obvious pleasure the hospitality he received from the people whose songs and stories he was eager to record for posterity. "I have three regrets," he tells us: "that I had not been earlier collecting, that I have not been more diligent in collecting, and that I am not better qualified to treat what I have collected." Carmina Gadelica nonetheless soon became an invaluable resource for all those who wish to study and understand Gaelic culture and for anyone who simply wants to experience the beauty and wisdom of the Gaelic oral tradition.
This beautiful hardcover box set of the original six-volume bilingual edition will become a family heirloom that readers will want to hand down to future generations.

Another key element of its ritual, the elaborate Seal of God, has been found in texts and amulets throughout Europe.
