very large 8vo, handsome green cloth gilt lettered, 662pp, three folding maps and 11 illustrations, rear joint a bit frayed in one spot, some very neat old pencil underlinings of key words in part of one chapter else a very good copy of this large and impressive volume. The title belies the breadth and depth of this, one of the most informed 19th century studies. The author traveled the world in research, fluent in many ancient languages. Arboreal shrines, Cambodian shamanism, Zoraster's Teachings, demonology in all religions, Taoism and its worship of nature, sacred waters in the Middle East, the Elohim of the Hebrews, the loss of scriptures in ancient times, the Alexandrian schools, Western misinterpretations of the Koran, the symbolism's of the Kaba of Arabia, the Turanian Bible, the Volgeses and Sasanians, Christian Bible and Avasta parallels, Mazdaism of the 12th & 13th centuries, etc & etc. With generous translations of special texts, chronologies, and a large index. For years this volumes was a kind of holy grail for me as a book collector, and when I saw my first copy I remember feeling faint!
