MESMER AND ANIMAL MAGNETISM: A Chapter in the History of Medicine

MESMER AND ANIMAL MAGNETISM: A Chapter in the History of Medicine (Used)

by Pattie, Frank A.

Publisher:

Binding: Hardcover with dust jacket

Book ID: 7263, 7263

Description

Hamilton: Edmonston 1994, cloth in dj, 303pp, good book production standards, new copy. Pattie is a recognized authority on hypnosis. Here he reconstructs the biographical details of Mesmer from original sources. This is a major reassessment of Mesmer and not a reworking of previous research. This is the definitive scholarly book on Mesmer in English, however Pattie is a skeptic when it comes to the questions of magnetic fluid and such. A highly useful monograph and a fine compliment to the many studies that suffer from excessive credulity. One of the most important contributions of this work are the lengthy translations by Pattie into English of the writings of Mesmer that are interspersed throughout the text. The whole ends with a chapter on the great moral character of Mesmer, plus good bibliography and index.

The manuscript appears and disappears throughout history, from the library of the Holy Roman Emperor Rudolf II to a secret sale of books in 1903 by the Society of Jesus in Rome. The book s language has eluded deciphe...
