THE HEALING HAND: MAN AND WOUND IN THE ANCIENT WORLD. (Used)
by Majno, Guido.
Binding: Hardcover with dust jacket
Book ID: 7083, 7083
quarto, cloth, 571pp, handsomely illustrated throughout in both color and B&W, extensive notes, bibliography (45pp long), and index, extremely well bound in wide weave white linen over boards, a very fine copy in a edge-chipped dust jacket. This is such a clever, engrossing, edifying book, it is hard to know where to begin describing it. Majno surveys all the great ancient cultures (mainly Egyptian, Grecian, Arabian, Chinese, East Indian, Roman) spotlighting their philosophic conceptions of medicine, wound and healing. Linked with the examinations of the various philosophies are the technologies that Majno describes, (many of them unknown to the average student of ancient medicine) that developed as expressions of these philosophies of life, health, and death. The author has a genius for welding seemingly disparate ideas, and his choice of illustrations is absolutely superb. A visual and intellectual feast. According to the author's preface he worked ten years to write this, doing most of his research at the incomparable medical libraries of Harvard University. For some unknown reason there about a million copies of this on the net, hence the low price.
